Nested ESXi installing on HCI 5

RevobyteBO2 Lv1Posted 12 Jan 2024 17:50

good day, I wanted to try installing an ESXi on a virtual machine running in my HCI environment.

At the first test, it refused to boot because the CPU was "not supported".
I solved this enabling the "Use CPU from host" setting.

Now ESXi refuses to boot because it cannot find any network adapter. I tried changing the eth0 type to E1000 but it did not solve the issue.

Has someone managed to install ESXi some way?
Thanks

Please be advised that our current HCI version does not support the installation of ESXi.

Good day everyone. I am trying to run ESXi 8u2 as a Virtual Machine.

As stated in the original post, I activated the setting "Use CPU from host". But the ESXi does not install because it says "no network adapter present" (see attachet screenshot nonet.jpg).

I switched the eth0 type from Realtek to E1000, with no effect. I don't have any E1000E or other available (see 1.jpg)
ESXi8u2 contains the community driver (previously Fling) for E1000 adapters.

- Check network adapter compatibility and ensure that the network adapter you have selected for the VM is compatible with ESXI.
- check network settings in VM and confirm that the network settings within VM are configured correctly.
- check ESXi compatibility and verify if the version you are trying to install is compatible with the virtual hardware and the hardware of your HCI.

Double-check the system requirements for the specific version of ESXi you are trying to install. Ensure that your virtual machine meets those requirements.

Ensure that the virtual machine has appropriate virtual disks and storage configured. ESXi requires a certain amount of disk space for installation.

Verify that the virtual machine's BIOS or UEFI settings are configured correctly, especially regarding virtualization extensions and other CPU features that ESXi requires.

After installing ESXi, make sure to install VMware Tools within the ESXi VM. VMware Tools includes drivers that improve VM performance and compatibility.

Running ESXi as a virtual machine involves nested virtualization. Ensure that your HCI platform supports nested virtualization, and the necessary virtualization features are enabled in the host's BIOS or UEFI settings.

Ensure that the virtual machine is connected to a virtual switch that is connected to a physical network adapter on the host. Verify that the physical network adapter is functioning correctly.

Instead of changing the network adapter type to E1000, consider using the VMXNET3 adapter, which is recommended for improved performance. Make sure to install VMware Tools after ESXi is installed to get the necessary drivers
