Virtualization systems and hypervisors of today are more versatile, and some of them can manage setups with CPU core counts that are not a power of two. Certain hypervisors may operate with configurations as high as 6 or 12 cores, but for simplicity and compatibility, it's usually best practice to stay with multiples of 2.
