HCI Physical Disks Error

jkia Lv1Posted 03 May 2023 13:23

Hello, we have been getting an error prompt that the physical disks are offline but these disks are physically connected to the HCI upon inspection. What seems to be the problem?

1. When there is only single disk offline, it might be the disk loosen or encounter abnormalities like bad sectors, IO error and such.
Suggestion:
a. In this situation, you may try to replug the disk and observe the disk status.
b. Take note that the disk must be in JBOD mode as replugging disk with other mode like RAID0/1 might not support hot replug.

2. When multiple/all disk offline in the same node, it is possible that the cache disk is offline or the RAID controller is encountering problem.
Suggestion:
a. Replug the cache disk if it is offline and monitor the disk status.
b. Check the RAID controller logs to determine whether it is damaged or offline.

If the suggestion above doesn't help, you may contact Sangfor Technical Support for further inspection and assistance.

It is possible that the disks are not properly configured on the Sangfor HCI. It is also possible that the disks are not detected by the HCI firmware. You may need to check the system configuration and make sure that the disks are properly connected and configured. You may also need to check for any firmware updates for the HCI to ensure compatibility with the disks.

If the physical disks are physically connected to the HCI but still showing as offline, there could be several possible reasons for this problem. Some of the common causes include:

Disk Failure: One or more disks may have failed, causing the HCI to show the disks as offline. This can happen due to physical damage, age, or other factors.

Cable or Connector Issues: There may be issues with the cables or connectors that are connecting the disks to the HCI. This could be due to loose connections, damaged cables, or other issues.

Disk Configuration Issues: The disks may not be configured correctly within the HCI, leading to them showing as offline. This could be due to issues with the RAID configuration, partitioning, or other settings.

Power Issues: There may be power-related issues that are causing the disks to show as offline. This could be due to insufficient power supply to the disks or problems with the power connectors.

To diagnose the problem, you may need to perform some troubleshooting steps such as checking the cable connections, power supply, disk configuration, and running disk diagnostic tests to identify any potential hardware failures. If the problem persists, it may be necessary to consult with a professional or seek assistance from the manufacturer or support team.

If you are encountering an error prompt stating that the physical disks are offline in the Sangfor HCI, despite them being physically connected, there are a few potential causes for this issue. Let's explore some possible problems and their solutions:

Disk Power Issue: Check if the disks are receiving power properly. Ensure that the power cables connected to the disks are securely plugged in and that the power supply is functioning correctly. Also, confirm that the power cables are not damaged or loose. If necessary, try connecting the disks to different power outlets or using different power cables.

Disk Connection Issue: Verify that the data cables connecting the disks to the Sangfor HCI are properly connected. Inspect the SATA or SAS cables and ensure they are securely connected to both the disks and the corresponding ports on the HCI. It's also essential to check for any physical damage to the cables or loose connections. If there are multiple disks, ensure that each one is correctly connected.

Disk Compatibility: Verify that the physical disks you are using are compatible with the Sangfor HCI. Check the compatibility list provided by Sangfor to ensure that the specific models and capacities of the disks are supported. Incompatible disks may result in connectivity issues or unrecognized drives. If necessary, replace the disks with ones that are officially supported by Sangfor.

Disk Configuration: Ensure that the disks are properly configured within the Sangfor HCI management interface. Access the management console or software provided by Sangfor and navigate to the disk management section. Confirm that the disks are recognized by the system and properly configured as storage resources. You may need to initialize, format, or assign the disks to specific storage pools or volumes within the HCI.

Hardware or Firmware Issues: If the above steps do not resolve the problem, there might be underlying hardware or firmware issues. In such cases, it is recommended to contact Sangfor's technical support for further assistance. Provide them with detailed information about the error message and the steps you have already taken to troubleshoot the issue. They will be able to analyze the logs and system information to identify any potential hardware or firmware problems and guide you through the resolution process.

Did you initialize and configure the additional disk

There could be several possible causes for the physical disks to be offline in HCI, such as:

The disks are faulty or have outdated firmware.
The disks are not certified or supported for Storage Spaces Direct.
The disks have lost communication or encountered IO errors due to network issues.
The disks are in the process of being removed from the pool.

To troubleshoot this issue, you can try the following steps:

Check the status and health of the disks using Windows Admin Center or PowerShell.
Run cluster validation and review the Storage Spaces Direct section.
Update the storage and drive firmware if necessary.
Contact your vendor if any of the disks are faulty or unsupported.

Check the disk status in the HCI management interface: Check the status of the disks in the HCI management interface to see if the disks are being detected and identified correctly. If the disks are not showing up in the management interface, there may be an issue with the physical connection or the disk configuration.

Verify that the physical connections are secure: Verify that the physical connections between the disks and the HCI are secure and properly connected. Check the cabling and connections to ensure that they are not loose or disconnected.

Check the disk health status: Check the health status of the disks using the manufacturer's diagnostic tools or a third-party disk monitoring solution. If the disks are failing or have errors, this could be causing the issue.

Check the disk controller settings: Check the disk controller settings in the HCI management interface to ensure that the disks are configured correctly and that the disk controller is detecting the disks.

Try rebooting the HCI: Sometimes, a simple reboot can resolve connectivity issues with the disks. Try rebooting the HCI and see if the disks are detected and identified correctly.

Contact technical support: If none of the above steps resolve the issue, contact the technical support team for the HCI solution. They can help diagnose and resolve the issue, and may be able to provide additional troubleshooting steps or firmware updates.
