Issue Description

Try to edit the VM's disk capacity but the column is grayed out and cannot be edited.

Error/Warning Information

Handling Process

1. Ensure the VM doesn't meet below criteria.
i. IDE disk capacity cannot be expanded when the virtual machine is running.
ii. It is not supported to expand capacity of the disk with storage based VM snapshots.
iii. Disk size cannot be changed for VM templates and virtual machines that are merging backup data.

2. Check if the HCI version is 5.8.8 and above.

3. Check if the VM has vmTools installed.

Root Cause

1. VM is migrated from other virtualization platform.

2. VM is an imported VM using ova or vma image.

*Due to cross platform migration or the VM is imported and caused the config file incomplete.

Solution

1. Locate the VM config file via HCI system backend.
Path: /cfs/nodes/cluster/qemu-server/vmid.conf

2. Check if the config parameter has high_performance_disks: ide0, ide1 included.
*Above example image is without high_performance_disks: ide0, ide1 parameter.
Command: cat /cfs/nodes/cluster/qemu-server/vmid.conf

3. Add in the high_performance_disks: ide0, ide1 parameter as image below.
Command: vi /cfs/nodes/cluster/qemu-server/vmid.conf

4. Refresh the VM profile from HCI UI.

5. The disk capacity configuration is now editable.

Suggestions

If the scenario varies from the above or the solution doesn't work, kindly consult specialist or R&D for further verification.
