Windows Server Installation has failed

Issue Description

In this scenario, once user installed vmTools will not able to upgrade Windows Server from 2012R2 to Windows Server 2016 anymore.

Handling Process

1. Find the attached file "psexec.zip" below and copy it to the VM.

2. Next, unzip it > open psexec.iso > copy psexec.exe out.

3. Run CMD as Administrator and drag psexec.exe into CMD and keyin -i -s regedit.


4. After that it will open regedit, go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\DriverDatabase\DriverPackages\
under this path find viostor.inf and delete it.


Notes: Only delete viostor.inf, others behind with amd64 can't be deleted.

Root Cause

Installing vmTools will write viostor.inf into regedit which will cause operation system failed to analysis 3rd party drivers, this will cause failed to install Windows Setup.

Solution

Delete viostor.inf
