Unable to perform vMotion over Overlay Network

Gokhannn Lv1Posted 2026-Mar-18 20:59

Hi,

In our environment, storage LUNs are connected via Fibre Channel (FC), so we are not using or requiring a dedicated storage network.

We also noticed the following statement in the documentation:

"Applies when the overlay network interface is assigned a physical IP address."

Is there a recommended design or best practice to enable vMotion traffic over the Overlay Network in Sangfor HCI environments?

We would like to understand whether:

Overlay networks are intended only for VM-to-VM communication, or

They can also be used reliably for host-level traffic such as vMotion.

Additionally, are there any specific requirements regarding:

network separation (Overlay vs Edge vs Management),

MTU settings,

or gateway configuration?

Currently, vMotion works only over the management network, not over the overlay network.

Thanks in advance.

Yes, vMotion uses Management Network by default
