How Can Two VMs Use the Same Storage?

Newbie698051 Lv1Posted Feb-21-2025 17:50

Hello,

Is there a way for two VMs to use the same storage in Sangfor HCI?
For example, something like NAS...

My use case is for web server load balancing, where I want to share the Document directory across multiple web servers. This way, when a file is uploaded to one web server, it is automatically available on all servers.

If anyone has knowledge about this, please let me know.
Thank you.

Hi, yes u can. I've done that like installing NAS in Sangfor HCI. Once done, other PCs or physical devices as long it can reach the NAS VM and other VMs even in the HCI can be mounted using the share file in the NASA.

My used case is that install the NAS in sangfor HCI and create the dedicated pool to be used for file sharing. Then, configured the physical devices such as PCs to mount pointing to the dedicated pool. Then I also configured other VMs in the Sangfor HCI to mount pointing to the dedicated pool. It works as long the network is reachable.

However what I did is a just a simple testing for NAS compatibility check with Sangfor.  You may need to run the test yourselves. If your in doubt, u can just raise a ticket to Sangfor support to verify this deployment. They will entertain you.

Hello, you certainly can. I have installed NAS in Sangfor HCI, for example. After that, other PCs or physical devices can be mounted using the share file in NASA as long as they can connect to the NAS virtual machine. This includes other virtual machines in the HCI.

Installing the NAS in sangfor HCI and setting up a specific pool for file sharing is my use case. Physical devices, such PCs, were then set up to mount and point to the designated pool. I then set up more virtual machines in the Sangfor HCI to mount to the designated pool. As long as the network can be reached, it functions.

But all I did was perform a quick test to see if Sangfor was compatible with NAS.  You might have to take the test yourself. You can simply submit a ticket to Sangfor support to confirm this deployment if you're unsure. They'll keep you entertained.

Linux-based clustered file systems like GFS (Global File System) or OCFS (Oracle Cluster File System) enable shared access while preventing conflicts.

Clustered file systems based on Linux, such as OCFS (Oracle Cluster File System) or GFS (Global File System), allow for shared access without causing conflicts.

Yes, you can achieve shared storage for multiple VMs in Sangfor HCI by setting up a NAS or using a shared storage solution like a distributed file system. This allows all your web servers to access the same Document directory, ensuring that any uploaded files are immediately available across all servers.

NAS storage is, of course, supported.

SAN storage LUNs are also supported. However, to prevent SCSI reservation issues, they must be allocated to VMs on different nodes

Check your Sangfor HCI management platform for a feature often called "File Services" or "aStor-NAS". This allows you to create a network share (either NFS for Linux VMs or SMB/CIFS for Windows VMs) directly from your HCI storage pool. Your web server VMs can then all "mount" this single, shared directory. This is the most integrated and efficient method fiddlebops
