Backing up your virtual machines (VMs) to a Synology NAS for disaster recovery is a common practice. There are several software tools available that can help you achieve this.
Here's a general guide to help you get started:
  • Ensure Compatibility: Check if your Synology NAS supports the required backup protocols and if it is compatible with your HCI platform. Verify if the HCI platform supports backup integration with third-party tools or if it has built-in backup features.
  • Choose Backup Software: Select a backup software tool that is compatible with both your HCI platform and Synology NAS. Some popular options include Veeam Backup & Replication, Acronis Backup, and Commvault. These tools provide comprehensive backup and recovery solutions for virtual environments.
  • Configure the Synology NAS: Set up the Synology NAS on your network and configure it to provide storage for the VM backups. Ensure that the NAS has enough capacity to accommodate your backup requirements. Set up appropriate access controls and security measures to protect the backup data.
  • Install and Configure Backup Software: Install the chosen backup software on a dedicated backup server or a VM. Follow the software vendor's instructions to configure the backup software and establish the connection with your HCI platform and Synology NAS.
  • Create Backup Jobs: Using the backup software, create backup jobs that specify which VMs to back up, the backup schedule, retention policies, and storage destination (Synology NAS). Configure any required options, such as compression, encryption, or incremental backups, based on your specific requirements.
  • Test and Validate: Perform test backups and recovery to ensure that the backup process is working correctly. Validate the integrity of the backups and verify the recovery process to ensure that you can restore VMs when needed.
  • Monitor and Maintain: Regularly monitor the backup jobs, check backup logs for any errors or warnings, and ensure that backups are completing successfully. Update the backup software and firmware on your Synology NAS to stay up to date with the latest features and security patches.

Hyper Backup: Synology NAS devices come with a built-in backup solution called Hyper Backup. It provides comprehensive data protection for various scenarios, including virtual machines. Hyper Backup supports VMware vSphere and Microsoft Hyper-V environments. You can use it to create scheduled backups of your VMs and store them on the Synology NAS. To set it up, follow the documentation provided by Synology for configuring Hyper Backup with your specific VM environment.

Veeam Backup & Replication: Veeam is a popular backup and recovery software that supports VM backup from various hypervisors, including VMware vSphere and Microsoft Hyper-V. It offers a wide range of features and can integrate with a Synology NAS as a backup target. You can configure Veeam Backup & Replication to automatically back up your VMs and store them on the Synology NAS. Veeam also provides options for granular recovery and replication for disaster recovery purposes.

Unitrends: Unitrends is another backup software that supports virtual machine backups. It provides agentless backup for VMware and Hyper-V environments. Unitrends offers features like deduplication, encryption, and replication. It also supports integration with Synology NAS as a backup target. You can configure Unitrends to create regular backups of your VMs and store them on the Synology NAS for disaster recovery.

Altaro VM Backup: Altaro VM Backup is a backup and replication solution specifically designed for virtual environments. It supports VMware and Hyper-V and offers features like deduplication, compression, and offsite backup. Altaro VM Backup can be integrated with a Synology NAS as a backup repository. You can set up scheduled backups of your VMs and store them on the Synology NAS using Altaro VM Backup.

Hi. To achieve your objective, may check the following suggestions.
1. Use Sangfor aDR function for Disaster Recovery.
> Need to deploy Sangfor SCP with aDR license.
> Need to have second Sangfor HCI cluster as Disaster Recovery site.
> Add the storage with iSCSI/FC protocol to DR cluster.
> Configure the DR policy in Sangfor SCP with required RPO.

2. Using third party tools/software like Veeam/Vinchin.
> Deploy the third party tools.
> Install necessary agent/plugin to the Sangfor HCI or in the VM OS layer.
> Configure corresponding policies for the Disaster Recovery purpose.
