VDI Restored Pool 100

Park Bo Gart Lv2Posted 11 May 2020 16:55

1. For the VDI "Restored Pool", I understand that the VM will revert to the original state after user logout/reboot, but the files in My Documents and Desktop will be saved.

Q: Upon user reconnection, will the User use the same VM? Is the User binded to the VM just like "Dedicated Pool"?

2. Please explain the sub-options under "Restored Pool".

* Enable Floating Pool (Non-Persistent)
* Support Domain User Roaming Profiles

3. Lastly, how can I achieve the following:

* "VM auto-delete" or "VM auto-revert" (just like restored pool) once the user logout/reboot.
* Before the VM be deleted or reverted, personal files of users will be saved somewhere.
* Upon user reconnection/login, the user will be served with a newly created VM or newly reverted VM

TIA!.

1. Yes, the user is binded to the specific VM just like a dedicated. Only difference is that a 'restored' mode will always return to the condition same as the template after reboot.

2.
i. Enable Floating Pool will randomly distribute a virtual desktop to the user from the Desktop Pool when the user accesses the Virtual Desktop resource every time. At this time, the free desktop resource in Desktop Pool will reduce by 1. If the user logs out or closes the virtual desktop, the system will release the corresponding virtual machine resource, and have it restored into the Desktop Pool. Then the free desktop resource in the Desktop Pool will increase by 1. When the Desktop Pool has zero desktop resource, the user will not be able to obtain virtual desktop from the desktop pool. He has to wait until other user releases virtual desktop into the Desktop Pool.

The Pool mode is mainly used for the scene of the teacher's computer in the classroom, the examination and the shift system in the enterprise, namely the client or user could share a virtual machine at different time and on different conditions rather than one virtual machine for each person.

ii. Support domain user roaming profiles will enable the AD Domain Roaming and to conduct centralized management on the issued application and script in the virtual machine by configuring the management template of Domain Server.
In addition, it also enables to save the personalized configurations and documents that generated in the virtual machine by the user, and to redirect the documents and configurations to Domain Server.

Note: If you have enabled the floating pool, then you will not be able to distribute personal drive for the virtual machine. If you have enabled the AD Domain Roaming, you have to configure the Automatically login to domain.

3.Lastly, you can achieve all this by deploying a restored mode type virtual desktop. Enable floating pool to switch between available VMs during re-login.  To allow users to save their files on a separate dedicated drive, click Auto create private disks. Select the datastore and choose the required storage size.
Note: Make sure "Auto assign private disk to users" is checked.

Now when the user re-login to the VMs, they may assigned to a different VM from the pool. But the private disk is always bind to that particular user.

Note: The instruction is based on the new version of VDC 5.4.2.  Some keywords may differ in your version but the logic is the same.
