Before you touch an IPS policy in production, here’s the test-first mindset I use

I am George Fady, I am a technical support engineer in Sangfor.

IPS identifies attack-code characteristics at the application layer and filters the harmful traffic - a level deeper than a traditional firewall’s IP/port filtering. That extra depth is exactly why a miscalibrated IPS policy can also do real damage to legitimate traffic if you’re not careful.
My rule before changing anything in a live IPS policy: build a test environment first, prepare the test traffic/tooling, configure the policy change there, run it, and check both the NGAF logs and the target server’s actual behavior - never on the real production network. It feels slower in the moment, but it’s much faster than the alternative: rolling back a policy change at 2am because it silently broke something nobody expected.

Question for the community: has your team ever skipped the test-environment step under time pressure, and did it come back to bite you? What convinced you to never skip it again?
