Move from 3 replicas to 2 replicas

Newbie637543 Lv1Posted Jul-03-2025 20:49

I will soon intall a 6-node cluster. Initially the cluster will not be full, so I would like to implement 3-copy replication. If the cluster then increases in vm and I get the need for additional space, without considering adding a node, is it possible to hot-swap from 3-copy to 2-copy replication?

Hi, as of the standard version HCI 6.0.1 and later, it is not possible to change the replication policy from 3-copy to 2-copy replication once the virtual storage has been set up. You would need to restore factory settings and set up the virtual storage again to modify the number of replicas.

Note:
If you are considering expanding your cluster in the future, it is recommended to plan your storage needs accordingly, as changing replication policies may require significant reconfiguration.

Hi there, yes u can switch from 3 copies to 2 copies. However it will restructure data, such as data sync n meta data rebuilding will start over. Assuming intially using 3 copies and ur storage is around 80% for an example, it will take some time for data to rebuild itself into 2 copies.

Hi, based on the information provided, here are the details regarding the use of the local disk where the Sangfor HCI system is installed:

1. System Disk Usage:
- In versions before the standard edition HCI 6.10.0R1, if the remaining space on the HCI system disk after installation is greater than 256 GB, it will be displayed in the local storage interface. However, it is **not recommended** to use the remaining space to store VMs.
- Starting from the standard edition HCI 6.10.0R1, the remaining space on the HCI system disk after installation will **not be displayed** in the local storage interface, and it is **not supported** for use as local storage space to store VMs.

2. Conclusion:
- The system disk is primarily reserved for the operating system and platform services. While it may show available space, using it to host virtual machines is not supported and is discouraged due to potential issues that may arise.

Recommendations:
- It is advisable to use dedicated local storage or shared storage for hosting virtual machines to ensure optimal performance and reliability.
- If you need to allocate storage for VMs, consider adding additional disks or using shared storage solutions.
