Why Is Your VM Slow When CPU and RAM Usage Are Normal?

A Virtual Machine (VM) can experience performance issues even when CPU and memory utilization appear normal. So, should we immediately add more CPU or RAM? Not necessarily!

Here’s what IT professionals should investigate:

**1. Storage Latency**
High disk I/O latency can slow down applications, databases, and file operations even when storage capacity is available.

**2. IOPS & Throughput**
Check read/write IOPS and throughput to understand whether storage performance is meeting the workload's requirements.

**3. Resource Contention**
Other VMs running on the same infrastructure may compete for shared CPU, memory, or storage resources.

**4. Physical Disk & SSD Health**
Investigate disk health, storage alerts, and ongoing rebuild or background storage activities.

**5. Compare Before You Change**
Compare the affected VM with a healthy VM. Identify the actual bottleneck before increasing resources or changing configurations.

**Pro Tip:**
**Available storage capacity does not guarantee good storage performance.** Always investigate latency, IOPS, throughput, and resource contention before deciding on a solution.

With Sangfor HCI, a structured troubleshooting approach helps IT teams identify potential bottlenecks and make informed infrastructure decisions.

**What do you check first when a VM becomes slow: CPU, Memory, or Storage Latency?** Share your experience in the comments!
