A VM suddenly becomes slow when opening files, running an application, or performing disk-intensive tasks.
CPU and memory usage look normal, and the HCI dashboard does not show an obvious capacity problem.
It is tempting to conclude that the VM itself is the problem.
But storage performance is not determined by capacity usage alone.

Troubleshooting Approach
1. Confirm what “slow” actually means
First identify the affected operation:

  • Application response is slow

  • File access is slow

  • VM boot takes longer

  • Database operations are delayed

  • Disk-intensive tasks take longer than usual

Avoid treating every “slow VM” problem as a CPU or memory issue.
2. Check the VM's disk performance
Look at the affected VM's:

  • Disk latency

  • IOPS

  • Read/write throughput

  • Read/write pattern

  • Recent changes to the VM

Compare the affected VM with a healthy VM where possible.
3. Check whether the problem is VM-specific
Ask:

  • Is only one VM affected?

  • Are other VMs on the same host experiencing the same behaviour?

  • Are multiple VMs using the same storage resources affected?

This helps determine whether the problem is closer to the VM or the underlying infrastructure.
4. Check the HCI storage layer
If multiple VMs are affected, investigate the storage infrastructure:

  • Storage latency

  • Disk/SSD health

  • Storage resource utilization

  • Storage alerts

  • Recent maintenance or configuration changes

  • Rebuild or background storage activity, if applicable

The key is to correlate the performance symptom with what the storage system was doing at the same time.
5. Compare healthy vs affected
A useful comparison is:
Affected VM → Healthy VM → Same Host → Other Host
The differences between them can help narrow down the scope much faster than checking every component randomly.

Common Mistake
“Storage capacity is only 60%, so storage cannot be the problem.”
Capacity and performance are two different things.
A storage system can have plenty of available capacity while still experiencing performance degradation.

Troubleshooting Mindset
Don't ask only:
“How much storage is available?”
Also ask:
“How is the storage performing right now?”
Look beyond capacity and correlate:
Latency → IOPS → Throughput → VM behaviour → HCI storage events
