How does the NGFW Custom Webpage work?

Ktrippings Lv1Posted 2026-Jun-19 08:48

Hihi!

Can I ask for info about how the Custom Webpage works? We have a client that wants to have the Custom Webpage pop up in restricted website in url filtering. I want to confirm whether the Athena NSF requires the authentication policy to be enables in order for the Custom Webpage to pop up. or Does it apply only to Application control?

The Custom Webpage feature is not dependent on Authentication Policy. It can also be used when access is denied by URL Filtering, Application Control, Antivirus, and other security modules that support redirection to a notification page.

For the specific scenario of URL Filtering:

Authentication Policy is not required for the Access Denied page to appear.
The firewall will display the configured "Access Denied" custom webpage when a URL Filtering policy blocks the user's access.
For HTTPS websites, SSL/TLS Decryption should be enabled if you want the firewall to inspect the URL accurately and present the custom block page. Without decryption, the firewall may only be able to terminate the connection or show a browser certificate/error message depending on the website and browser behavior.

You can configure the page under:

System → General → Custom Webpage → Access Denied

As shown in the screenshot, the description explicitly states that this page "appears when access to a website is denied", which includes URL Filtering block actions.

In summary:
✅ URL Filtering supports Custom Webpage redirection.
✅ Authentication Policy is not required.
⚠️ For HTTPS websites, SSL Decryption is recommended/required to ensure the custom block page is displayed properly.

Hope this helps.

Hello
It's an intriguing question. According to what I understand, when access is blocked by specific security policies, the Custom Webpage can be used to show a personalised block or notification page. However, the particular Athena NSF setup and firmware version may determine whether it shows up for URL filtering, application control, or authentication-related events.
It is advisable to verify whether the URL filtering policy is set up to reroute users to the Custom Webpage and whether it is associated with any login requirements. I'm hoping a member of the support staff can explain the precise behaviour.
awaiting the response as well!

Hi,
Interesting question. From my understanding, the Custom Webpage can be used to display a customized block or notification page when access is denied by certain security policies. However, whether it appears for URL filtering, application control, or authentication-related events may depend on the specific Athena NSF configuration and firmware version.
I'd recommend checking whether the URL filtering policy is configured to redirect users to the Custom Webpage and whether any authentication requirements are tied to that policy. Hopefully someone from the support team can clarify the exact behavior.
Looking forward to the answer as well!

Hello, as far as I'm aware, your firewall cannot inject a custom message inside an encrypted stream, hence you must activate decryption if you want Custom Webpage to appear when accessing prohibited websites under url filtering.

This depends on where the traffic is being intercepted.

hi as far as i know, you have to enable decryption if you want Custom Webpage to pop up when accesing restricted website in url filtering because your firewall cannot inject a custom message inside an encrypted stream.

Yes, you can use the Custom Webpage feature for URL Filtering, and it does not require Authentication Policy to be enabled.
