Cross-Cluster Migration: Carry Backup Data Along

George Fady Lv2Posted 2026-Jun-12 07:50

The problem: "The backup of the VM will not be migrated. Please make a backup after the VM completed the migration." This means customers migrating VMs across clusters lose all their backup history.
The suggestion:
Add an option in the Cross-Cluster Migration wizard to also transfer the existing backup chain to the destination cluster's backup repository (if same or newer version), preserving backup history and RPO continuity.

This week, I migrated all my VMs from one cluster to another. This feature would have been very useful. In the new cluster, I connected the backup repositories and found all my backups, but because the VM IDs had changed, they appeared to be from deleted machines.
