Sangfor HCI Installation Mode on Third-Party Servers

Sangfor's HCI documentation specifies that third-party servers must boot in Legacy BIOS (CSM) mode when installing the HCI software. In practice, this means setting the server's firmware to "Legacy" or "CSM" rather than UEFI before booting the Sangfor HCI installer. Sangfor explicitly recommends Legacy mode for generic hardware (Dell/Lenovo/HPE servers) because UEFI boot can cause compatibility issues with the Sangfor kernel on some equipment. In contrast, RAID mode and IDE mode are disk controller settings (not firmware boot modes) and are not relevant to the HCI install process.

  • Legacy (BIOS/CSM) mode: Required. Sangfor’s guidelines say to use traditional BIOS boot on third-party servers for HCI installation. This avoids the common UEFI-related boot problems on certain servers.
  • UEFI mode: Not used for third-party installs. Although UEFI is needed if you have very large disks (GPT), Sangfor’s HCI installer on third-party servers is run in Legacy mode by default.
  • RAID/IDE mode: These refer to SATA controller configurations, not the firmware boot mode, and are not the answer to this question.
