Windows 11 VM Screen Size 10

sysOhm Lv1Posted Sep-19-2025 15:35

Good morning everyone.

I'm trying to make a VM running Win 11 Pro N to run some tests on future apps needed by the organization.
After some troubleshooting just to have the OS boot, I finished the installation using "OOBE\BYPASSNRO" to avoid setting up a MS account.

After installation I couldn't change the screen resolution and it was stuck to 800x600.

I then used the Registry Editor and change the keys from 600 and 800 to 1024 and 1280 respectively.

But after restarting the VM, the screen was still as small as before, just much more zoomed out and it does not now allow me to change the resolution (stuck again at 600x800 with the option greyed out).

I tried reinstalling VMTools but nothing happened.

What can I do?

Thanks

I believe your issue isn't registry-related, it's that Windows 11 is using the Basic Display Adapter.
Reinstall or manually load the Sangfor Display Driver from VMTools, and the resolution options will unlock.
If all else fails, use RDP as a workaround.

You can try this

1. Reinstall Sangfor VMTools completely
- Uninstall VMTools from the VM.
- Reboot.
- Reinstall VMTools (make sure you use the version bundled with your Sangfor HCI 6.10 / 6.11).
- After installation, check Device Manager > Display Adapters, it should show Sangfor Display Driver (not Microsoft Basic).

2. Manually update the display driver (if VMTools doesn't fix it)
- Open Device Manager > Display Adapter.
- Right-click > Update Driver.
- Browse > point to the VMTools installation folder (usually C:\Program Files\Sangfor\VMTools\Drivers\Display).
- Install the Sangfor video driver manually.

3. Check VM hardware settings
- In the Sangfor HCI Console > Edit VM > Display Settings.
- Ensure Video Type = QXL or Standard VGA (whichever Sangfor recommends for Win 11).
- Assign sufficient VRAM (try 32MB+).

4. As a fallback: Enable RDP
- Even if the VM console is stuck at 800×600, enabling Remote Desktop lets you connect via RDP and use any resolution you want, since RDP uses a virtual driver independent of the VM console.

Changing from VGA to XQL fixed the issue!

The path you suggested in option 3 was not present inside the C drive, i'll look better for it.

Thanks for your answer!
