Using System Disk for VM Storage

ccesario Lv1Posted Jul-05-2025 01:04

Hello,

Im currently testing the Sangfor HCI platform and I would like to know if it is possible to use the local disk where the system is installed (Local Storage) to host virtual machines.
I couldn’t find an option to allocate or create VMs on this storage — am I missing something?
The disk appears under Local Storage with plenty of free space, as shown in the screenshot attached.

Is this supported, or is the system disk reserved only for the OS and platform services?

Thanks in advance!

Hi, based on the information provided, here are the details regarding the use of the local disk where the Sangfor HCI system is installed:

1. System Disk Usage:
- In versions before the standard edition HCI 6.10.0R1, if the remaining space on the HCI system disk after installation is greater than 256 GB, it will be displayed in the local storage interface. However, it is **not recommended** to use the remaining space to store VMs.
- Starting from the standard edition HCI 6.10.0R1, the remaining space on the HCI system disk after installation will **not be displayed** in the local storage interface, and it is **not supported** for use as local storage space to store VMs.

2. Conclusion:
- The system disk is primarily reserved for the operating system and platform services. While it may show available space, using it to host virtual machines is not supported and is discouraged due to potential issues that may arise.

Recommendations:
- It is advisable to use dedicated local storage or shared storage for hosting virtual machines to ensure optimal performance and reliability.
- If you need to allocate storage for VMs, consider adding additional disks or using shared storage solutions.
