#TechTips# | Why Is the Internet Slow Even When the WAN Link Is UP?

Not always. A WAN link can be physically UP while users still experience slow browsing, intermittent connectivity, or poor Internet performance.

Here are 7 things I would check on a Sangfor NGAF:

1. WAN Link Status ≠ Internet Health

First, verify more than just the interface status.

Check:
• WAN gateway reachability
• Packet loss
• Latency
• DNS resolution
• ISP link stability

A link can be UP while the upstream gateway is experiencing packet loss.

2. Check PBR / Policy Routing

If multiple ISPs are configured, traffic may be taking an unexpected path.

For example:

User → NGAF → ISP-1
when the intended path is:

User → NGAF → ISP-2

Review your Policy-Based Routing, link status detection and route priority.

3. Verify NAT

The security policy may allow the traffic, but if outbound NAT is not correctly applied, Internet access can still fail.

Always verify:

LAN → Security Policy → NAT → WAN

4.Don't Ignore DNS

A very common scenario:

8.8.8.8 is reachable
Websites are not opening

This can indicate a DNS issue rather than an Internet connectivity issue.

Test both:

ping 8.8.8.8
and
nslookup google.com

This helps separate Internet connectivity from DNS resolution problems.

5.Check Security / Application Control

NGAF is not only forwarding traffic. Security modules may inspect the traffic

Review:
• Application Control
• URL Filtering
• IPS
• Antivirus
• SSL inspection
• Traffic control / QoS

A policy can technically allow traffic while another security feature affects the application experience.

6.Check Packet Loss and Latency

Don't focus only on bandwidth.

For example:

100 Mbps + 1% packet loss
can sometimes provide a worse user experience than:
50 Mbps + stable latency + 0% packet loss.
Check latency, packet loss and jitter when troubleshooting intermittent slowness.

7.Check NGAF Resource Utilization

If CPU, memory, sessions or other system resources are heavily utilized, performance can be affected.
Before changing policies, check the firewall's overall health.

A Simple Troubleshooting Flow

When users report:
“Internet is slow.”
Don't immediately change the firewall policy.

Troubleshoot layer by layer:

Client → LAN Gateway → NGAF → Security Policy → NAT → PBR/Route → WAN Gateway → ISP → DNS → Internet

This approach helps identify where the problem actually starts instead of guessing.

Key takeaway:

WAN UP does not always mean Internet HEALTHY.

Good firewall troubleshooting is about following the traffic path and validating each stage.
