Sangfor aHM: Agentless VMware-to-HCI Migration

George Fady Lv2  Posted 2026-Oct-04 05:32

When moving workloads from VMware to Sangfor HCI, minimizing downtime while maintaining data consistency is an important part of the migration strategy.

Here are some useful points about aHM:

1. Agentless Migration
For VMware environments running alongside Sangfor HCI v5.8.2 or later, aHM can be used to migrate workloads without installing migration agents or additional tools on the source VM.

2. Online Migration Workflow
aHM creates a new VM on the HCI platform and continuously synchronizes data from the VMware VM using incremental backups.

This allows the source workload to remain operational while the majority of the data is transferred.

3. Minimize Downtime
During migration, monitoring the remaining incremental/delta data is important.

When the remaining delta is reduced to less than 256 MB, the source VMware VM can be shut down. The final incremental data is then synchronized to the HCI VM, allowing the migration to complete with minimal service interruption.

4. Practical Migration Flow

VMware VM → Initial Data Sync → Continuous Incremental Sync → Delta < 256 MB → Source Shutdown → Final Sync → HCI VM Ready

Key Takeaway:
For VMware-to-HCI migrations, understanding the online synchronization process and final cutover stage is essential for reducing downtime and maintaining data consistency.
