Adding a lower specs node on existing HCI Cluster

Newbie474428 Posted Apr-21-2026 08:57

we have existing cluster with
2x28 cores cpu
512gb memory
6x 3.8tb storage

we are planning on adding new nodes with scaled down specs
2x34 cores cpu
256gb memory
4x 3.8tb storage

is this compatible?

Hi there, for me it's more on the CPU model and the RAM model. The capacity is the 2nd thing. If the model is the same but the capacity varies, then its okay. If the model is different, the performance may be intermittent  if using for production. At least the brand and type is similar or almost similar

Yes, compatible — but not ideal.

CPU (28 vs 34 cores): No issue, cluster will handle it
RAM (512 vs 256 GB): New nodes have less memory → fewer VMs can run there, may cause imbalance
Storage (6 vs 4 disks): Main concern → different capacity & IOPS → uneven data distribution and possible performance issues
